City of Jackson installs new EV charging stations

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mississippi’s capital city is receiving new electric vehicle chargers, as announced by the City of Jackson on Thursday.

A total of 10 EV chargers are installed in several parking lots across the city, including Union Station, Thalia Mara Hall and the Hood Building on State Street. There are also charging stations at Hinds Community College and the Mississippi Children’s Museum.

“We’re proud to introduce these modern EV charging stations - one of the first of its kind in our city and a symbol of our dedication to building a cleaner, more connected future,” Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said. “This station represents more than just an investment in infrastructure - it’s an investment in our people, our environment and our economy. It shows that Jackson is serious about embracing smart technology and leading the way in modern transportation solutions.”

This EV charging initiative was funded by Entergy’s Environmental Initiatives Fund and installed by both Adopt a Charger and Lavalle Electric. Tesla donated its Universal Connector for the project, featuring both the North American charging Standard and the J-1772 connector.

The EV charging stations are free to use until further notice, compatible with all plug-in vehicles currently on the market and additional stations are under review to be installed.

“This is more than a celebration of infrastructure,” Planning Director Jhai Keeton said. “It’s a milestone in our city’s ongoing efforts to create a greener, smarter and more accessible Jackson. By installing these EV chargers, we’re making a clear statement: Jackson is not standing still. We are moving forward - toward clean energy, modern transportation and a downtown that works for the future.”
